Daily 5 benefits

Recently one of our "Word Work" activities (graph a word, where they roll a dice, then write a word with that many letters) transformed into a full on Math activity. The boys used the data from "Graph a Word" to create a bar graph.....I love it when learning happens ALL over the classroom, in many different ways, on many different levels.#Daily5 benefits

Extra Recess!

Thanks to all the students hard work....we've earned extra recess!  AND everyone was on Outstanding today!!!

First 6 Weeks

We've already got 6 weeks under our belt! We have all adjusted well, and have been really interested in the study of spiders (of all things!). We've discovered different webs around the campus, read various informational text about spiders and spider webs and some have even written little mini reports about them! They all wrote poems about spiders and are excited to begin our pumpkin science next week.

What's the most requested activity from the students?
MATH POCKETS!!!  Fun math games (many like the Math Minds family activities that go home).  We're having fun sharpening our computation skills and becoming more confident in math skills.

Measuring with nonstandard units of measurement

A group of students just measured the room with linking cubes, a non-standard unit of measurement.  Why is this good?  Because it's using both sides of the brain and growing a deeper understanding of measurement.  How long is our room? 532 linking cubes!

Great First Few Weeks!

We're off to a great start this year!  We've been fully engrossed in our Reading and Writing and are continuing to build upon our concepts learned.  I am half-way through my individual assessments and am looking forward to working with small groups as well as some one on one.  Recently, we created a Doubles booklet in Math with all our doubles concepts learned and our "Doubles Chant".  We also worked on number bonds with number bracelets, and even Mrs. Campbell got in on the action!

Apples and Actions

2K students completed an "Apples & Actions" project to learn and talk about kid respectful behaviors.  Students used apples as an analogy to connect their actions to how others feel.  Apples appear different on the outside, but on the inside they are similar.  If you are careless with an apple, it will end up bruised and dented or even busted.  People are the same way, if we are unkind or disrespectful, people can have their feelings bruised.  The students completed a Venn Diagram, sorted examples of good kind actions and disrespectful actions, then completed a summary sheet with a partner.

Math is Fun

The students did yet another, "eat your math" activity...Jellybean graphing and math fun! This time our math questions page to go with our graph was a little harder than February's.  The students did great though, and got to enjoy a sugary treat when finished!

St. Patrick's Day Graphing Fun

Besides our green tag day, we had some fun St. Patrick's Day activities.  We polled the class on how they liked potatoes, then created a bar graph.  We are continuing to learn about Ireland and St. Patrick and have many great writing pieces already written by many students!  A big hit was our graphing of Lucky Charms cereal though-can't beat good Math fun!

Update on Penguin Research

Penguin Reports!  Penguin Reports!  The students have begun writing their Penguin Reports and some have even completed them all together!  We have begun drawing out actual real life size of some of our favorite penguins in comparison to student's size.

President's Day

After reading some books on various presidents of the United States, the students created "lap books" and glued them to their Daily 5 Notebooks.

Penguins, Penguins everywhere!

The penguin research has begun!  Everyone is reading various nonfiction books about different penguins, writing down interesting facts learned....researching!  We were inspired to learn more about these animals after learning about the continent of Antarctica in a book Ann and Liv Cross Antarctica, the true story of two women explorers.  So, stay tuned for penguin reports!

Magnet Exploration

2K is loving all our science discoveries and explorations...our most recent study has been magnets (which has been another big hit with the children)
Can a magnet attract through paper? YES!
