What are Hunk & Chunks? Hunk and chunk, or "hunking and chunking" is a decoding strategy that helps children with their accuracy skill. "Hunks & Chunks" refer to vowel r-controlled vowels, digraphs, and diphthongs (letter combinations) as well as word ending variations (_at, _ake, etc). The combinations we study and learn (and train our brain to recognize by hunking and chunking) are in the majority of the words that the children read.
